'Always demand EFD receipts'-President Mutharika

His Excellency, President Peter Mutharika has called on all Malawians to always demand EFD receipts after acquiring items and services from Value Added Tax (VAT) registered businesses.

The President said this in Mzuzu when he inspected the city’s road projects on Thursday, December 22, 2016.

He said the country is relying on taxes to run Government operations and that no-one should be evading tax.

“Malawi has been running on locally generated resources for three years now without any budgetary support from donors. We have built schools, hospitals and all these roads you see are from our money, your money which is paid in taxes.

“We are now on our own and operating public services using taxes. This is why I would like to remind everyone to be paying taxes. If you go to a shop you must always request for [EFD] receipts and you must insist that whoever sells you something gives you [EFD] receipts. This is good for your record and it also ensures that necessary taxes are paid,” he said

The President further stated that he is aware of people who are evading taxes and that Government is using all necessary measures to deal with tax evaders.

MRA has been appealing for the public to also verify EFD receipts by checking that they have;

·       An MRA logo

·       List and price of each item

·       Amount of money paid

·       Amount of VAT deducted

·       Date and time of purchase.

The Authority encourages anyone who has been issued an EFD receipt with wrong information to report to Deloite Tip Offs anonymous on toll-free line 847 for Airtel, Access and TNM numbers and 8000 0847 on MTL numbers or the nearest MRA office.
