Malawians geared to demand EFD receipts

Malawians have committed to grow the culture of demanding receipts whenever they purchase taxable items. This was clearly revealed during the launch of the Lisiti Langa EFD Awareness Campaign Launch in Lilongwe. Traditional Authority Chimutu commended MRA for the launch saying it is high time leaders from all spheres of life empower people in the country with information regarding taxes.

“There are people who do not know that the roads, drugs in hospitals, construction of schools and many other developments which Government undertakes are financed by taxes. “On behalf of my colleagues [chiefs], we will further take this message to all our subjects that they should be getting receipts for any of their purchase,” T/A Chimutu said.

Taking his turn, the Guest of Honour, Mayor of Lilongwe City, Councillor Willie Chapondera stressed that the duty to pay tax is for every Malawian. “It is you and I as consumers who pay Value Added Tax (VAT) and not businesses. The role of businesses when it comes to VAT is to remit the tax to MRA. Therefore, the receipt is proof that we have indeed paid the necessary tax and bought a product or service from the particular business. Demand the receipt, it is yours,” emphasised the Mayor.

Deputy Minister of Defence and Lilongwe City West Member of Parliament Honourable Aggrey Massi, called on MRA to appropriately use the law on those involved in fraudulent practice of EFD receipt manipulation. He said this will effectively remind the society to adhere to laws of the land.
Speaking earlier, MRA Commissioner General, Mr. Tom Gray Malata urged all consumers to always demand EFD machine-generated receipts every time they purchase goods and verify them.

“When EFD receipts are issued, sales transactions are transmitted online to MRA’s central server. This enables MRA to fully assess and collect the correct amount of Value Added Tax (VAT) from operators,” the CG said. He said traders and consumers must embrace EFD’s since they are here to stay adding that this is a modern way of doing business.

“I appeal to anyone denied an EFD receipt from VAT registered businesses or those issued with EFD receipts not tallying with their purchases to always report to MRA,” the Commissioner General said. The launch included a big walk headlined by the Malawi Police Band from the Game Stores Complex to Bwalo La Njobvu and back. It was attended by people from all walks of life including Lilongwe City chiefs, Members of Parliament, the District Commissioner, religious and business communities, just to mention some.
