Requirement on Duty-Free imports for Returning Residents

Who is a returnee?


 A returnee: means a citizen of Malawi coming or returning to Malawi, to permanently reside in Malawi.
A returning resident typically refers to someone who has previously lived in a particular country and then left for a period of time but has now come back to live there again.  For instance, a returning resident could be someone who lived in Malawi and went to the UK for postgraduate studies and has returned to Malawi. A returning resident could also be someone who migrated to another country for work and has decided to return to Malawi. 

A returning resident enjoys duty free importation of goods he or she was using while abroad but there are some requirements. The returning resident should have been outside Malawi for not less than one year prior to importation. 

The returning resident can import the following items duty-free; Articles of apparel or clothing whether new or used; Other personal and household effects which have been owned and used by such a person, for a period of not less than six months prior to the date of arrival in Malawi; A returning resident can also import motor vehicles and caravans but this is limited to two vehicles for a married person and one vehicle for an unmarried adult person who is employed outside Malawi. The vehicle or caravan should have been owned and used by the person for not less than one year prior to importation. The returning resident will enjoy this duty-free privilege once in every five years.



Requirements


The followings are the requirements:

1. The returning resident has been outside the country not less than one year prior to importation:

a)      Articles of apparel whether new or used

(b)     Other personal and household effects which have been owned and used by such person, for a period of not less than six months prior to the date of arrival in Malawi.

 2. For Motor vehicles and caravans not exceeding: -

 i.            Two, for a married person; or

 ii.            One, for an unmarried adult person who is employed outside Malawi, and which has been owned and used by the person for not less than one year prior to importation.
