Chessam donates chess boards to MRA

The Chess Association of Malawi (Chessam) has donated chess boards to the Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) Chess Club.

The handover of the chess boards took place at Msonkho House in Blantyre on Monday 15^th April 2024.

Chessam General Secretary Gift Howahowa said the donation is aimed at promoting chess at MRA.

‘‘We heard that there is a chess club at MRA and as an association we decided to donate the chess boards as one way of promoting chess at MRA,’’ he said.

Howahowa added that the donation was also in appreciation of the continued support from MRA to Chessam through sponsorship of chess tournaments.

Receiving the donation, MRA Executive Director for Corporate Services Agnes Katsonga expressed gratitude to Chessam for the donation.

‘‘Chess is a unique game which requires strategic thinking, reasoning and planning. It has an impact on a person’s actions. We learn a lot from chess,’’ she said.

Katsonga said the direction now is to prioritise the mental health of members of staff by looking at an officer as a total person.

‘‘We need to understand a person as a whole. There is a lot of pressure. Games like chess help employees to socialise. Successful people socialise. Networking is very important. We can learn a lot of things from chess,’’ she said.
