The Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) has encouraged Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Mchinji to register for tax as required by the law. The appeal was made recently by Nellie Phiri, Revenue Officer for Domestic Taxes, when she opened an interface meeting with SMEs in the district.
Phiri reminded the audience that when they register for tax, they would enjoy many benefits including accessing a Tax Clearance Certificate (TCC) upon application which is mandatory for anyone to be eligible to compete for a public tender or access some public services.
She added that registration for tax was easy as one can apply using Msonkho Online in the comfort of their home or office.
‘’Gone are the days when people ran away from paying taxes. Today we need the tax for various development projects and this can only be achieved if we voluntarily comply with the tax laws,” added Phiri.
During the meeting, MRA drilled the participants on how to register for tax, how various taxes administered and operated, with a lot of emphasis on Presumptive Tax, the tax that suits them as well as submitting returns and paying taxes on time
Speaking on behalf of the business people, George Sato, a hardware dealer, said that they were grateful to MRA for the meeting which enabled them to learn more about the taxes that affect them.
“As business people, we want to take part in national development and we can only do that if we register and pay taxes in full,” said Sato.
The meeting was attended by about thirty key businesses from in and around Mchinji Boma.
