MRA engages media on Public Finance Management

The Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) engaged members of the Association of Business Journalists (ABJ) on its role in Public Finance Management (PFM) at a media training in Salima.

The media training, conducted from 5th to 6th November at Sigelege Beach Resort in Salima, was facilitated by the Treasury in the Ministry of Finance.

Acting Director of Policy Planning and Research James Kenani said MRA is involved in in the PFM Cycle at policy and budget execution stages only.

“PFM has a number of stages but MRA is only involved at Policy stage where there is tax policy implementation as well as recommendations for tax policy changes and at the Budget execution stage where MRA mobilizes domestic resources,” Kenani explained.

Kenani added that the Authority is only mandated to administer tax laws passed by Parliament and has no powers to amend or pend any tax legislation. He added that government and parliament determine how much revenues MRA should collect.

Director for Public Finance Management Systems Monalisa Mhango, who represented the guest of honor during the opening ceremony, said the training is important as it will assist the Treasury and the media work towards implementation of 2063 development goals.

“The objective of the training is for all participants to discuss, share experiences, procedures, rules and processes used by government in public finance and perception that the media has towards public finance and we believe by the end of the training the media will have knowledge on how government operates in public finance,” Mhango explained.

Media houses that attended include; Kulinji.com, Malawi Broadcasting Station, Zodiak Broadcasting Station, Nation Publications Limited, Radio Islam, Capital FM, Times Group, and freelancers.
