MRA equips independent schools with tax education

MRA recently conducted workshops with members of Independent Schools Association of Malawi (ISAMA). The workshops were held in Lilongwe, Kasungu, Mzuzu, Mulanje, Liwonde and Blantyre.

Addressing participants in Lilongwe, Hilda Mkandawire, Public Relations Specialist, underscored MRA ‘s commitment in conveying tax information, knowledge and skills to different stakeholders including operators of private schools in the country with a view to enhance tax compliance.

‘’As MRA we are making every effort to reach out to different stakeholders in the economy with in order to equip them with tax information and knowledge so that they should make informed decisions and increase tax compliance,’’ added Mkandawire.

In their presentations, Martin Kasaila, from Domestic Taxes and Susan Kadewere from Customs & Excise Divisions drilled the participants in a number of areas. These included administration and operation of PAYE, Withholding Tax, Fringe Benefit Tax and Tevet Levy. 

They were also drilled in areas such as tax incentives and duty free items for learning institutions as well as dangers for failure to comply with tax laws, among others.

Speaking on behalf of ISAMA president, Mr. Wycliff Chimwendo expressed his gratitude to MRA for holding conducting the tax meetings in all the three regions which he said will enable the members to handle tax affairs with ease.

‘’This will make our members to be more tax compliant than ever before,’’ added Chimwendo.

Each meeting attracted an average of 70 participants. Mercy Malomboza and officers from the stations were part of the MRA team at the workshops.
