MRA holds workshops with chiefs in Mangochi
The Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) recently conducted two separate workshops for chiefs in Senior Chief Jalasi area in Mangochi.
The main purpose of the workshops was to rally support from the chiefs and help the Authority to effectively deal with smuggling and tax evasion rampant in the area.
A total of 252 traditional leaders including Senior Chief Jalasi, Senior Group Village Headmen, Group Village Headmen and Village Headmen attended the workshops.
Speaking at the opening of each workshop, Wilma Chalulu, MRA’s Manager Marketing Communication and Mc Hizzal Kawanga, Manager Taxpayer Education, called upon the chiefs to support anti-smuggling initiatives championed by MRA in order to effectively eradicate smuggling and tax evasion in the area.
In response, Senior Chief Jalasi applauded MRA’s wisdom to hold the two meetings with chiefs in his area and promised to support anti-smuggling initiatives by MRA using their control and influence in their areas of jurisdiction.
Addressing fellow chiefs, Chief Jalasi urged them to get united and support MRA.
‘’As you are aware, MRA cannot be everywhere and it is, therefore, our duty to jointly work with them to eradicate smuggling and tax evasion in areas that we control,’’ said the Senior Chief, adding that he would not allow his area to be used as boulevard for smugglers.
During the presentations, MRA explained to the chiefs the core functions of MRA, type of taxes administered, the importance of taxes to national development and challenges that were inhibiting revenue collection in the country in general and that of Senior Chief Jalasi area in particular.
The chiefs were then divided into groups to come up with strategies and techniques they would employ to address the challenges MRA was facing.
In addition, the chiefs were given an opportunity to list projects that the Authority could fund as part of MRA’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).
The workshops were attended by Station Managers for Customs & Excise, Andrew Mbewe based at Chiponde and Mavuto Mapira from Mangochi Domestic Taxes office.
