MRA seals Blantyre Print offices
The Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) has today, January 13, 2017, taken a distraint action on Blantyre Print & Publishing Company Limited of Private Bag 39, Blantyre.
MRA Head of Corporate Affairs, Steven Kapoloma says the action has been undertaken for failure to settle a tax liability amounting to K675.9 million.
“The tax liabilities were uncovered through a comprehensive audit and comprise K504.9 million as taxes due and K171 million in penalties and interests. This is coming from non-payment for Value Added Tax, Corporate Tax, Fringe Benefit Tax, Withholding Tax, Pay As You Earn for specified periods between January 2011 to March 2016,” he said.
The Authority has also seized vehicles belonging to the company in order to force the company to remit the unpaid taxes.
Kapoloma says the action is in line with Taxation Act, Section 107 (3) (a) which authorizes the collection of taxes by distraint on all properties or rights to property of a taxpayer.
The distraint action relates to recent tax liabilities uncovered through a comprehensive audit. The Company has a history of non-compliance and there is another outstanding case of K1.3 billion overdue taxes in court. BP&P has always sought court injunctions to frustrate efforts by MRA to collect the taxes due.
