MRA takes Taxpayer Education to Namiwawa secondary school

The future for high compliance rate rests upon school learners. It is in this context that MRA recently conducted taxpayer education at Namiwawa Community Day Secondary School (CDSS) in Blantyre.

Speaking to Form 3 and 4 students recently, Thokozani Chiwaya, Taxpayer Education Specialist, advised the students to take taxation very seriously because the Authority is grappling with a lot of challenges like tax evasion and smuggling because some of the people in business today did not learn more about taxation at their youthful age.

This is why, she hinted, that after taxation was introduced in the school curricular in the mid-2000, the Authority has been promoting the learning of taxation by visiting schools and making presentations to cement what is taught in class by teachers.

‘’It is, therefore, my belief and hope that you will be tax compliant when you leave school and start businesses,’’ said Chiwaya, emphasizing that for Malawi to meaningfully develop, people must be patriotic by paying taxes to government when due.

During the presentation, students were drilled on areas like the roles and responsibilities of MRA, how tax laws are made, various taxes administered by MRA, why people should pay taxes and challenges faced by MRA when administering taxes.

In her welcoming remarks, Mrs. Ruth Kapito, the Head teachers of the school, said that students at the school were always very eager to learn more about taxes and that was why they were very excited to host MRA at their institution.

She, therefore, encouraged MRA to regularly visit the school to make tax presentations as this will motivate students to take taxation lessons more seriously.

Chiwaya was accompanied to the school by Edgar Mpelepele.
