The Catholic Church commends MRA for taxpayer education

The Catholic Church in Malawi has commended the Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) for intensifying taxpayer education among its congregation in the country.

The remarks were made recently by the Chairperson of the National Association of Diocesan Catholic Clergy of Malawi (ADCCOM), Father. Wezi Martin Mfune, at St. Anthony Major Seminary in Mchinji during the 26th National Plenary Session for ADCCOM.

Father Mfune added that he looks at MRA as a partner in national development and as such it was very important for the church to work with MRA to ensure that the Authority collects more revenue for national development that trickles down to all the people of the country including the Catholic membership.

“There is need for more collaboration between the Catholic Church and MRA in order for us to understand taxes that affect us so that we comply with the tax laws” added Father Mfune.

In his presentation, Steven Kapoloma, Head Corporate Affairs, observed that some churches are engaged in various businesses but they do not have adequate information and knowledge on how various taxes are operated and administered.

Kapoloma further said that there are many tax incentives on the table for churches to enjoy but most churches are not aware of these incentives.

“That is why MRA decided to make this presentation so that you should know the various incentives available that would enable you to import goods or buy goods locally without paying some taxes,’’ hinted Kapoloma.

Over seventy Catholic priests including four Catholic Bishops from across the country attended the 26th National Plenary Session for ADCCOM.
