The Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) has appealed to businesses in Zomba and beyond to comply with the tax laws in order to avoid unnecessary penalties.
The remarks were made recently by the Station Manager for Zomba Domestic Taxes Office, Jane Maere, when she opened a half-day workshop with Small to Medium scale Enterprises (SMEs) in the city.
Maere hinted that MRA is currently engaging various sectors in the economy so that they are aware of their rights and obligations on taxation.
‘I, therefore, encourage you to take advantage of this meeting to acquire more information, knowledge and skills on taxes that affect you so that you comply with the laws and avoid unnecessary penalties and fines that can negatively impact on your businesses,’’ said Maere.
During the meeting, MRA explained on how one can register, file return and pay taxes through Msonkho Online, the new tax measures that were gazette recently and how Presumptive Tax and Withholding Tax are operated and administered, among other areas.
Speaking on behalf of the participants, Innocent Taulo from Phingo Investment and General Suppliers, thanked MRA for the workshop which he said enabled them to acquire vital information on taxes.
On the same day in the evening, the Authority conducted a meeting with the Asian business community in the city. MRA drilled the audience on the need to use Electronic Fiscal Devices (EFDs) and issue fiscal receipts. The meeting also discussed the implementation of Kalondola Project which is intended to benefit the consumers and the Government.
