Happy New Year dear taxpayer
With just four days to 2018, we would like to wish you our dear taxpayer a happy and prosperous New Year. We would like to take this opportunity to express our sincere gratitude to you for being tax compliant over the past twelve months. Tax compliance plays a critical role in revenue collection and we would like to urge you to remain tax-compliant in 2018.
However, there are some taxpayers who had been non-compliant in 2017 and we would like to appeal to them to regularize their tax affairs in the coming year. As a tax administration, we have a taxpayer service unit and one of its core functions is to assist taxpayers to meet their tax obligations. The role of taxpayer services is fundamental to improving levels of voluntary tax compliance and we will continue providing this service in 2018.
Low levels of tax compliance place additional pressure on tax revenues and this has a ripple effect on Malawi’s socio-economic development. Much as we assist taxpayers to meet their tax obligations, we also apply enforcement interventions if there is a risk of tax compliance.
However, enforcement is always the last resort because we believe that tax compliance is more effective and efficient by putting greater emphasis on assisting taxpayers in meeting their tax obligations. Apart from providing an effective and efficient taxpayer service, we will also continue our efforts to bridge any information and knowledge gaps through tax education.
One of the biggest challenges we faced in 2017 was smuggling and we would like to appeal to you to assist us in containing the problem in the coming year. Through Tipoffs Anonymous Service, you can report cases of smuggling and you could be rewarded up to K500, 000 depending on the taxes recovered.
We wish you our dear taxpayer a Happy and Prosperous New Year!
