The Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) has launched a Know Your Customer (KYC) exercise to update taxpayers’ data base as the tax administration embarks on a data cleaning exercise ahead of the roll-out of Msonkho Online, a modern computer system that automates end-to-end tax processes.
The exercise started on 6th March, 2019 and taxpayers will be updating their details until 31st May, 2019. All registered taxpayers, both individuals and organisations, must update their details by filling forms and submitting them online or at MRA offices across Malawi.
There are two KYC forms, one for individuals and the other for organisations, and they can be downloaded from the MRA website, www.mra.mw, or collected from any MRA office.

Taxpayers are required to fill simple details on the form, for instance their trading names, business addresses, contact details, tax types, Taxpayer Identification Number (TPIN), bank details, mobile money accounts and branches among others.
Filled forms can be uploaded on the website or delivered at the nearest MRA office or emailed to: firstname.lastname@example.org. Taxpayers can also visit MRA offices, fill the forms and submit them.
The Authority has deployed 100 members of staff across Malawi who will be visiting taxpayers to assist them to fill and complete the forms.
The exercise is only intended to update taxpayer information and enhance easy communication with the taxpayer.
The Authority would therefore like to encourage taxpayers to fill and submit their forms in order to get various services from MRA, for instance Tax Clearance Certificates (TCC) and Withholding Tax Exemption Certificates.
