The Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) is implementing a Voluntary Compliance Window (VCW) to relieve taxpayers including businesses reeling from the outbreak of the Corona Virus Disease (Covid-19). VCW, effective from 8 April to 31 October 2020, allows non-compliant taxpayers to settle their tax obligations without paying penalties, interest or any charges.
Both registered and non-registered taxpayers are eligible to apply for VCW. Registered taxpayers who have not been paying taxes, filing tax returns, or filing incorrect tax returns are eligible to apply for VCW. Registered taxpayers who have been filing tax returns but have become non-compliant are also eligible to apply.
VCW is also open to non-registered taxpayers who have been making taxable transactions but were neither paying taxes nor filing returns. Importers who have been smuggling, misclassifying or under-declaring imports are also eligible to apply. Such importers include those who imported motor vehicles but did not pay Customs duties
To apply for VCW, download an application form from the MRA website www.mra.mw. VCW forms are also available at all MRA stations. Upload completed VCW forms on the website or email them to firstname.lastname@example.org. Taxpayers can also send the completed forms through WhatsApp to 0997 222 835 or 0997 222 836.
The Authority is warning taxpayers who are eligible to apply for VCW but fail to do so that MRA will embark on intensive and extensive audits and investigations to net all tax defaulters and smugglers and punish them in accordance with tax laws.
