12 bags of chamba intercepted at Biriwiri
The Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) has intercepted 12 bags of chamba at Biriwiri Customs Station in Ntcheu District.
The drug was seized on Saturday night, 26, May 2018 by a Flexible Anti-Smuggling Team (FAST) which was patrolling the area.
The Indian Hemp weighs 339.1kgs and it has since been handed over to Ntcheu police together with the vehicle conveying the illicit drug.
The patrol team which seized the chamba comprised two MRA officers and two police officers.
The interception of the chamba at Biriwiri comes barely a few weeks after MRA seized 64 bricks of the same drug at Kamuzu International Airport (KIA) in Lilongwe.
The 64 bricks of cannabis, weighing 280 kilogrammes, were concealed in two metal flat boxes and each box contained 32 bricks of the illicit drug.
Head of Corporate Affairs Steven Kapoloma said apart from collecting tax, it is also MRA’s responsibility to protect the general public from hazardous goods and products along the country’s borders.
