Businesses advised to follow procedures on goods, clearance

The Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) has advised players in the business sector to abide by all required procedures when importing goods into the country.

MRA Manager, Marketing Communications Wilma Chalulu said this on Saturday at a press interview prior to a destruction of 3,500 trays of eggs that were smuggled into the country.

She said the eggs were intercepted and seized at MRA’s Lirangwe roadblock in Blantyre two weeks ago.

“Eggs are among restricted goods and one requires to obtain a permit from the Ministry of Industry and Trade before importing them. We seized the consignment from one, John William of Limbe who has failed to produce the required permit.

“MRA is calling upon businesses in the country to always find out what is required when importing specific goods. Our offices are always open, we are available online and we can be contacted using Toll-Free line 672 and 8000672 for those using MTL phones. It is always important to know the requirements for goods importation before buying and trying to import,” Chalulu said.

A Scania truck registration number CP 5820, whose details shows that it is owned by Given Mkisi of P.O Box 80 Blantyre, was used and it was also seized. The transporter has been slapped with a K1.2 million fine.

Members of the general public are encouraged to work together with Malawi Revenue Authority to curb the malpractice of smuggling. Strange movement of goods should be reported to the nearest MRA station or the Tip Offs Anonymous Service toll free numbers; 847 for Airtel, TNM and ACCESS subscribers and 80000847 for MTL. Rewards are given to anyone who provides credible information on acts of smuggling.
