Catholic church lauds MRA on tax awareness

The leadership of the Roman Catholic Church in Malawi has applauded the Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) for conducting tax education among members of its church in the country.

The remarks were made on Tuesday, 27th February 2024, by the Right Reverend Alfred Mateyu Chaima of the Roman Catholic Church during their Presbyterium meeting held in Thondwe Pastoral Centre, Zomba.

Chaima, observed that just as any business person, religious organisations need tax awareness so that they should abide to the laws regarding tax and ensure that all the people in the country voluntarily pay taxes for national development.

“I thank MRA for coming forward and conduct tax education among senior church elders gathered here and this should not be the last meeting, there are a lot of church members who need to be well informed about tax so that as a church, we should not be called people who always evade tax.

“This is why the Catholic church felt it imperative to welcome MRA to make presentation on taxation so that the church and its members should be more conversant with taxes that affect them,” added Chaima.

In response, MRA’s Head of Corporate Affairs, Steven Kapoloma, assured the Roman Catholic Church and its followers that the Authority is eve ready to provide information to all the people in the country realizing that all businesses and churches operate under the law of taxation.

During the meeting, MRA made presentations on Type of Taxes, Custom Procedure Codes (CPC) and tax waivers the church can utilize to import goods duty free.

Th meeting attracted over thirty senior Catholic church members.
