CG leads MRA staff in Poppy Week

President Peter Mutharika on Tuesday 1st of November led the Malawi nation in inaugurating the Poppy Week at Sanjika Palace in Blantyre ahead of Remembrance Sunday slated for 13 November up until 20 November.

The President symbolically bought a Poppy flower at K1 Million as a way of fundraising for the Commonwealth Ex-Service Leagues of Malawi (COLEM) for ex-servicemen and their families.

In his address, the President appealed to all Malawians to support this noble task by buying poppies and wear them with pride.
However, in support of the initiative, MRA’s Commissioner General Mr. Tom Gray Malata, on Thursday 3 November, led the MRA staff in symbolically honoring the fallen heroes.

The Commissioner General encouraged the members of staff to fully participate in the Poppy Week by buying Poppies and putting them on during the set period in support of all fallen noble citizens.

The red poppy is a symbol that is used across the world to remember those who have given their lives in World War One. The reason poppies are used to remember those who gave their lives in battle is because they are the flowers which grew on the battlefields after World War One ended.

Ever since then, poppies have come to be a symbol of remembering not just those who gave their lives in World War One, but all those who have died on behalf of their country.
