Dwangwa sugarcane growers get tax education
MRA conducted seven tax education meetings with sugarcane growers in Dwangwa from 19th to 21st October 2016. This followed an invitation that Sugarcane Growers Association of Malawi (SUGAM) extended to MRA. The main purpose of the meetings was to clarify and explain various taxation issues that affect the sugarcane growers.
In her opening remarks at one of the meetings, Misozi Magaleta of Concern Universal said that sugarcane growers have a lot of questions on how taxes are deducted. Many of them do not understand why they are deducted Withholding Tax and charged Value Added Tax (VAT) on the sugarcane they sell to Dwangwa Sugar Corporation.
“We engaged MRA to explain these issues because we believe that tax issues can best be addressed by the Authority,’’ said Magaleta.
Responding to Magaleta’s sentiments, Hilda Mkandawire, Public Relations Specialist, thanked Concern Universal for allowing MRA to facilitate at the meeting.
She informed the audience that MRA had intensified tax education in order to fill the information and knowledge gaps people have on taxation.
She, therefore, assured the audience that MRA will continue visiting and interacting with various businesses groups to share tax information and skills and enable them make informed decisions on the same.
The MRA team comprised Ishmael Maseko and Deus Chikaonda from Dwangwa Domestic Taxes and Hilda Mkandawire from the Corporate Affairs Division.
The meetings were organized and funded by Concern Universal and were conducted in seven associations namely, Mgodi, Mowe, Nzireni, Tipate, Buwa, Kasitu and Timadziwa and were attended by over 400 sugarcane growers around Dwangwa.
