MRA donates 90 bags of cement to Mwanza District Assembly

The Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) has donated 90 bags of cement to Mwanza District Assembly. Each of the bags weighs 50 kilogrammes and has a market value of K6,500; totalling K585,000.

MRA’s Manager, Marketing Communications, Wilma Chalulu said the cement was recently seized from importers who flouted importation procedures.

“All Importers of cement require a licence authorising them to import, but for this case they did not have it. MRA seized the cement and it was forfeited to the Malawi Government. The Government, therefore, requested us to donate the cement to Mwanza District Assembly,” said Chalulu.

‘MRA is part of the community in Mwanza and as such it saw it fit to give the seized consignment to the community, where it can improve livelihood, just as the taxes MRA collect are intended to do the same’ she said

Mwanza District Commissioner Jack Nguluwe expressed gratitude to the Authority saying the assembly has projects which the cement will assist to complete.

“We will use the cement to construct restrooms at the district market. The district’s abattoir is dilapidated, road drainage systems need reinforcement and the assembly’s rest house is in bad shape, the cement will be used in these areas,” the DC said.

The assembly’s chairman William Gocho appealed to organisations and the private sector in the country to consider investing in the infrastructural development of Mwanza.

“Mwanza is a border district which is a first point of contact for people coming from other countries, therefore, it needs to have proper markets, in-roads and infrastructure to reflect the economic activities here. As we look forward to the strengthening of the relationship with MRA, we appeal to other well-wishers, local and international investors to come here,” he said.

MRA encourages anyone who notices smuggling and tax evasion practices not to hesitate but report through toll free number 847 for Airtel and TNM subscribers or 80000847 for MTL subscribers.  Informants can also send their tips to the Centre through email address: reportswqm@tip-offs.com or fax to 0182 229.
