MRA encourages exports growth

The Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) has urged players in the local industry to actively pursue taking their fair share of the global market by increasing production of export goods.

MRA board chairperson, Vizenge Kumwenda said this on Friday, 26th January 2024, during International Customs Day commemorations in Lilongwe held under the theme: “Customs Engaging Traditional and New Partners with Purpose”.

“As MRA we are there to facilitate legitimate trade. In line with theme, it is notable that the country has a growing exports sector in mining and other areas where more goods are being produced. Therefore, we are readily available to engage the business community to provide necessary guidance on procedures required,” he said. During the event, MRA presented awards of recognition to some of its partners.

These included the Ministry of Trade & Industry, Malawi Police Service, Malawi University of Science and Technology, GIZ, Bankers Association of Malawi, Civil Aviation, Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services, Ministry of Health and Malawi Bureau of Standards MBS Deputy Director General, Thomas Senganimalunje commended MRA for the recent upgrade of ASYCUDA WORLD system which is used for customs management and clearance and processes, with over 180,000 transactions annually. The upgrade will enable MRA and MBS systems to interface.

"The implication is that all the products that are coming into the country are checked for tax purposes and at the same time checked for quality purposes,” said Senganimalunje.

Senganimalunje further said this will improve speed as, in the past, documents had to physically move from one office to another whereas, the system interface, information reaches MRA and MBS at the same time, thereby reducing clearance time.
