The Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) and Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) will now be exchanging electronic data through interfacing of their respective customs management systems.
The data exchange will facilitate sharing of information through the respective Revenue Authorities Customs Management Systems Tanzania Customs Integrated System (TANCIS) for TRA, and ASYCUDA World for MRA.
Funded by the UK Government through Trademark Africa, electronic data exchange aims at streamlining customs processes, promote transparency, and facilitate seamless trade operations.
Speaking during the launch on Monday 5th June 2023 at the Kasumulu/Songwe border, MRA’s Executive Director for Corporate Services, Agnes Katsonga said electronic data exchange will benefit both nations as it will deepen economic co-operation in as far as Customs Systems and Procedures are concerned.
“This integration of our customs systems will not only improve trade efficiency but also attract foreign investment and create an enabling business environment. We are optimistic that this collaboration will strengthen our bilateral relations and pave the way for regional economic growth hence signifying a breakthrough in cross-border trade efficiency and fostering regional economic growth.” Katsonga explained.
She also added that much as more innovations are coming in Revenue Authorities but there is also need for the mindset change in as far as patriotism is concerned.
“There is need for the public to change the way we think and love our countries by paying the required tax which is much needed for the development of the countries. Much as we are bringing in innovations such as electronic data exchange, the individuals also have a role to play to embrace the change and themselves change as well in line to what the innovations are bringing for the positive results.” Katsonga added.
Speaking on the same, TRA’s Deputy Commissioner General, Mcha Hassan Mcha highlighted the need for the two nations to exchange electronic data citing that it will ease border operations.
"The electronic data exchange between TRA and MRA is a monumental step towards modernizing customs procedures and simplifying cross-border trade. By leveraging advanced technology, we aim to optimize revenue collection, reduce clearance times and enhance trade facilitation.
According to the United Nations COMTRADE
database on international trade, the export value between Tanzania and Malawi
in 2022 amounted to USD 81.54 million. With the implementation of electronic
data exchange, it is anticipated that both countries will witness revenue
growth.
