Namiwawa CDSS gets taxation lessons
Eager students at Namiwawa Community Day Secondary School had lessons in taxation where they engaged officials from MRA on Thursday, 18 October 2018.
The team from MRA comprised Manager Taxpayer Education, Mc Hizzal Kawanga, Hilda Mkandawire and Henry Mchazime both officers in the Authority’s Corporate Affairs Division.
Addressing form four students at the school, Kawanga gave an overview of taxes in Malawi and MRA’s background.
“We would like you to know your duties as responsible citizens, major among these is paying taxes. Our goal is that students in the country become compliant taxpayers in the future,” he said
Kawanga guided the students on how to calculate Pay As You Earn (PAYE) tax and import duties. He then urged the students to raise awareness in their respective communities in reporting cases of tax evasion and smuggling.
Malawi’s school syllabus has taxation as a topic under Mathematics and Social Studies and MRA complements that by conducting tax awareness sessions under the Authority’s schools programme.
