Scores attend tax return filing road show at Katoto taxi rank
Scores of registered taxpayers and potential taxpayers thronged Katoto Taxi Rank in Mzuzu to a road show organized by the Malawi Revenue Authority in Mzuzu.
The road show was organized to remind taxpayers about their obligation of compiling tax return and submit to MRA when due.
Speaking after the event, the Manager Taxpayer Education, Mc Hizzal Kawanga, urged the gathering to submit their tax return on time to enable the Authority assess their tax liability due to the Government.
He observed that many business people in the City had registered for tax and were submitting their return to MRA as required but there a few individuals who were not complying with the law and urged them to comply or risk being penalized.
He also encouraged taxpayers to use ePayments, an online tax payment platform to settle their tax liabilities in the comfort of their homes and offices and submit the tax return for the same to MRA when due.
MRA was accompanied with a drama group, Chikolopa Performing Arts, which conveyed basic messages on the importance of compiling tax return and submitting to MRA on time and the importance of taxes to national development.
The comedians also relayed messages on how taxpayers can report cases of tax fraud through Tip Offs Anonymous Service by dialing a toll free number, 847, and receive a reward of up to K50, 000.
The audience had the opportunity to ask questions which included what will happen to those who fail to submit a tax return or taxes to MRA, is it not possible to electronically submit a tax return like paying taxes through e payment and how long should one waif for a tip when it is successful, among other questions.
The Authority had lined up 45 road shows that were conducted in some businesses and trading centres in Blantyre, Lilongwe and Mzuzu.
