In a landmark event
celebrating 50 years of diplomatic and economic partnership, Malawi and
Mozambique on Friday 6th June 2025, inaugurated the Dedza-Calomue
One-Go Border Post (OGBP) at a colourful ceremony held at Dedza border station.
In their key note addresses at the function, the President of the Republic of Malawi, Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera and his counterpart, the President of the Republic of Mozambique, Daniel Francisco Chapo, hinted that apart from promoting seamless flow of trade and modernizing trade between the two countries, the One-Go Border Post was intended to deepen bilateral and diplomatic ties between Malawi and Mozambique.
"As we celebrate 50
years of our relationship, the launch of the OGBP marks a new chapter in
elevating trade and partnership to new heights for the people of the two
countries,’’ said President Chakwera adding that the OGBP is a gateway to a
brighter future.
On his part, President Chapo
said the inauguration of the Dedza-Calomue
One-Go Border Post is a testament to the strong friendship and
cooperation between Mozambique and Malawi.
He added that the new
facility will go a long way in facilitating smooth, fast and profitable trade
between the people of the two countries.
"Today marks the
retirement of a barrier from the once-called One-Stop Border Post to a One-Go Border
Post that will eliminate redundant procedures thereby promoting competitive trade
among our people,’’ hinted President Chapo.
Speaking earlier, the Minister
of Trade and Industry, Honourable Vitumbiko Mumba, observed that for too long,
excessive bureaucracy had stifled trade between Malawi and Mozambique.
He, therefore, added that the
opening of the OGBP was a proof that when countries work together for a common
purpose, non-tariff trade barriers can be dismantled.
The main objective of the
OGBP is to streamline procedures, reduce transit times and enhance trade
efficiency between Malawi and Mozambique, just to mention a few.
The launch of the Dedza-Calomue One-Go Border Post was witness
by high-ranking government officials and businesses from Malawi and Mozambique
and other foreign dignitaries.
