The Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) has underscored the need for young boys and girls to learn about taxation in their early stages of life.
The remarks were made recently by the Manager Taxpayer
Education North & Centre, Thokozani Chiwaya, when MRA hosted over forty
students from Maranatha Girls Academy at the Inland
Examination Centre (ICE) in Kanengo, Lilongwe.
Chiwaya emphasized that for any nation to develop,
people of the country should voluntarily pay taxes and this can only be
achieved when the taxpayers know their rights and obligation pertaining to
taxes.
This is why, she said, MRA is going flat out engaging
various sectors in the economy including students to enable them know the importance
of registering and paying taxes promptly.
‘’Malawi, therefore, banks on you to learn more
about taxation so that we build a very strong foundation for voluntary tax
compliance for the future, she added.
In his response, Abel
Mugona, Social Studies teacher from Maranatha Academy, said he was very
delighted that his students learnt various processes and procedures that MRA
employs when clearing goods. He went on to say that what his students learnt
after the study tour will enable them pass examinations on taxation as well as
being responsible citizens in the years to come.
Before
the students were drilled in taxation, Beatrice Simwaka, Customs Officer, took
the students around the MRA premises where they practically learnt the stages
of clearing goods, offloading, how scanners are used to identify goods in
containers and removal of seals, among other areas.
