Employers rallied to pay Tevet Levy

MRA together with the Technical, Entrepreneurial and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TEVETA) have appealed to employers in the country to timely pay Tevet Levy and enjoy various compliance benefits.

MRA Deputy Commissioner Non-Tax Revenue Elton Nsapato and TEVETA Head of Technical Services Wilson Makulumiza Nkhoma made the call on Wednesday, 21st June 2016 in Blantyre during a sensitisation meeting that attracted many participants.

Nsapato appealed to all organisations that have not yet registered for Tevet Levy to do so with MRA and ensure that appropriate payments are done.

Taking his turn Makulumiza Nkhoma said employers must always pay the levy on time and take advantage of the educational trainings TEVETA offers to boost skills in their employees.

In his presentation, TEVETA Director of Finance Elwin Sichiola said payment of Tevet Levy is a legal requirement which every good corporate citizen must comply with and it comes with several benefits.

“Compliant employers have access to quality assured training programmes and short courses that are aimed at meeting specific needs of their employees. Such employers can also be reimbursed up to 20 percent of their total direct training cost of any TEVETA approved in-house training provided the percentage is not more that 20 percent of the total TEVET Levy paid in the previous year,” Sichiola added.

MRA Deputy Director Corporate Affairs, Steven Kapoloma, advised the employers to do self-assessment and make monthly payments of the levy together with Pay As You Earn (PAYE) to avoid accumulating arrears.

“Don’t inconvenience yourselves by accumulating arrears which you may fail to settle as this will lead to penalties. Just prepare to pay the levy with PAYE as you come to MRA,” Kapoloma urged.

MRA took over the responsibility of collecting the Tevet Levy from November 2015. During the meeting, participants took time to interact with officials from both MRA and TEVETA on how best to utilise the new Tevet Levy payment arrangement.

Similar meetings are expected to be conducted in Lilongwe and Mzuzu on June 23 and June 24, 2016 respectively where employers and MRA as well as Teveta will hammer out issues of common concern.
