In its effort to continue cultivating a populace
that is well conversant with taxes, the Malawi Revenue Authority on Tuesday, 23rd October
2018 visited HHI Secondary School in Blantyre and made a tax presentation to
Form 3 and 4 students.
In his opening remarks, Manager Taxpayer Education,
Mc Hizzal Kawanga, said MRA visits learning institutions to complement what is
being taught by the teachers.
“We want you to know what taxes are and the role
they play in the development of the country. We expect you to go out there and
tell others the importance of registering and paying taxes,” said Kawanga.
Kawanga continued to say that the current crop of
business people did not have the opportunity to learn about taxes at your age
so we hope you are going to be role models in future.
During the visit, MRA made a tax presentation which
included taxes administered by MRA, how tax laws are made, importance of taxes
and uses of taxes, among other topics.
When MRA invited questions from the audience,
several students wanted to know if they could demand EFD receipts from vendors,
if the president pays taxes, why MRA collects tax on pension when PAYE was
already deducted during ones working years and how duty is collected on
vehicles, among others.
In his remarks, HHI’s Deputy Headmaster, Moses
Chanza, extended his gratitude to the MRA team as the tax lesson has strongly
supported normal lessons from teachers.
“We normally teach our students taxation under
Social Studies but MRA’s presentation was good and they have answered our
questions with expertise and we are to have them here,’’ he said.
“As you go back to the office extent our profound
gratitude to MRA management for your visit. When there is anything you would
like to share in the future, do not hesitate as our door is open, “said Chanza.
Chanza also thanked MRA for the pamphlets as they
would assist both teachers and students in their studies.
