As part of its Corporate Social Responsibility
(CSR) the Malawi Revenue Authority on Wednesday, 2nd April 2025,
donated K60 million to the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) in
response to appeals made to support the victims of Cyclone Jude.
In his address at the official presentation
ceremony in Lilongwe, MRA Board Chairperson, Mr. Vizgenge Kumwenda said the donation
is in line with MRA’s CSR Policy Key Pillar Number One of which guides the
Authority to support Communities as a humanitarian response in times of need.
“I feel privileged to lead the Malawi Revenue Authority in presenting
this cheque of K60 million, as a donation to DoDMA, to support our brothers and
sisters who were adversely affected by Cyclone Jude to enable them provide
food, shelter and other items and improve their livelihoods in this time of
need.
“Much as MRA is responsible for assessment, collection and accounting
for Government tax revenue, we are a people-oriented organisation. We are aware
that we exist as a revenue body because of the people who pay taxes. This is
why when disasters strike, we feel duty bound to support those communities hit
by humanitarian crises,” the Board Chairperson said.
In his remarks prior to the official handover
of the donation, MRA Commissioner General, Mr. Daniel Daka assured stakeholders
that the Authority will always join hands with the relevant authorities to
support victims of natural disasters in order to alleviate their suffering in
line with our CSR Policy.
“We are very committed to see to it that the
CSR Policy is always implemented in alignment with the MRA Vision, so that we
enhance compliance and at the same time manage risks in tax administration,”
the Commissioner General said.
Acknowledging receipt of the K60 million donation, DoDMA’s Director of
Disaster Preparedness and Response, Reverend Moses Chimphepo said the gesture
will greatly assist the 32,000 victims of Cyclone Jude as they are trying to
get back to their feet following the disaster.
