The Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) has called on accountants to register for Msonkho Online, a computer-based system that allows taxpayers to make transactions online.
Manager Marketing Communications Wilma Chalulu said this when she made a presentation on Msonkho Online at the lakeshore conference for the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Malawi (ICAM).
Chalulu said Msonkho Online, which is being implemented on a pilot phase at Blantyre and Mzuzu Domestic Taxes Stations, provides huge benefits to taxpayers.
“Msonkho Online is accessible anywhere and at any time and this is convenient to taxpayers. With Msonkho Online you will also be able to register for taxes, submit returns and pay your taxes online,” she said.
Furthermore, Chalulu said Msonkho Online is beneficial to taxpayers as it reduces paperwork and cost of compliance.
She said registered taxpayers, both individuals and organisations, are required to register for Msonkho Online credentials to access their records and later make tax transactions online.
“It’s a very simple process. All you have to do is visit www.mra.mw to register for taxpayer credentials. Just click on Taxpayer Login on Msonkho Online Portal on the website, then click Register Now, fill in your details and submit your application,” she said.
Chalulu added that taxpayers who are not yet registered for taxes can also register for Msonkho Online credentials then apply for their Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) through Msonkho Online.
“Just click on TIN Application on the Msonkho Online Portal on the website then click Register Now, fill in your details and submit your application. Its as simple as that,” she said.
However, she pointed out that applicants who have successfully created their credentials for Msonkho Online are required to login under TIN Application to begin the process of applying for TIN.
The Authority is implementing a number of modernization projects which are aimed at reforming business processes and procedures in order to maximize tax compliance and revenue collection.
Apart from Msonkho Online, MRA is also implementing ASYCUDA World, Electronic Fiscal Devices (EFDs), document validation and ePayments among several modernization initiatives.
