The Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) is informing owners of public transport motorcycles (popularly known as Kabanza) that following the publication of the Customs and Excise (Public Transport Motorcycles) Regulations, 2025 on 17 February 2025, public transport motorcycles used in commercial transport service for the transport of the general public are eligible for clearance at reduced rates of customs duty.
The reduced rates of duty are applicable to public transport motorcycle (Kabanza) operators who imported their motorcycle prior to 17 February 2025, when the Regulations came into force.
The following are the types of qualifying public transport motorcycles and the customs duty rates applicable:

1 0 to 50cc 8711.10.19 K56,000
2 51 to 100cc 8711.20.20 K56,000
3 101 to 250cc 8711.20.21 K77,000
The Authority further wishes to inform public transport motorcycle (Kabanza) owners that processing fees and other customs charges shall not be payable under this procedure.
Therefore, all public transport motorcycle (Kabanza) owners who imported their motorcycle prior to 17th February, 2025 are, from Monday, 10 March 2025, advised to go to the nearest Customs office for clearance of their motorcycle or for any enquiries. During the clearance process, owners of public transport motorcycles (Kabanza) will be expected to present their National identity and Road Traffic Registration Number cards.
This special clearance procedure will be implemented until 30 June 2025. Owners of public transport motorcycles (Kabanza) who do not clear their motorcycles under this special clearance procedure risk have their uncleared motorcycle impounded.
