Chiefs in Mzimba and Karonga committed to fight smuggling

Chiefs in Mzimba and Karonga districts have commended MRA for intensifying awareness against smuggling and have committed total support to fight the malpractice.

The traditional leaders made the remarks recently when MRA held consultative meetings with the chiefs and their community policing forums on how to work together to eradicate smuggling along the border areas.

Speaking at his headquarters, chief Jenda of Mzimba commended MRA for engaging them in the fight against smuggling while observing that MRA cannot deal with the challenge alone because of the country’s porous borders.

For this reason, he assured MRA that he will mobilize community policing forums and the communities in his area to block smugglers from using his area as a launchpad for smuggling and conveyance.

In other separate meetings, chiefs Pusi, Timoti and Songwe said they will work with MRA to fight smuggling in their respective areas so that MRA collects more revenue for national development.

From August to October 2022, MRA has been holding a series of meetings with chiefs and their community policing forums in the Central and Northern regions to lobby support from the traditional leaders and their subjects to work with the Authority to tackle smuggling.

In his remarks at all the meetings, Mc Hizzal Kawanga, Manager Taxpayer Education, underscored the need for chiefs and their communities to collaborate with MRA to arrest smuggling as the Authority cannot win the battle alone due to limited resources.
