The Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) has said that the Authority has managed to process tax refunds for the majority of farmers across the country.
The remarks were made by a senior official from MRA, Shida Nyirenda, during TAMA Farmers Trust Annual Area meeting held at Kasiya in Lilongwe recently.
She said that in the current financial year, the Authority made the processing of tax refunds for farmers a top priority and that was why almost all the farmers have had their refunds processed and paid.
For this reason, Nyirenda assured the remaining few farmers whose refunds were being processed to be patient as the process would be concluded before the end of the current financial year.
‘’In this regard, I would like to commend all the farmers for exercising patience while their refunds were being worked upon,’ said Shida adding that the issue of processing refunds was no longer an issue of concern because farmers were deducted one percent Withholding Tax final tax payable.
Responding to MRA sentiments, Councilor Golden Kalichero of the area, commended MRA for coming to the meeting to update farmers on the status of their refunds.
“It is heartening to see stakeholders coming together to discuss and find solutions to challenges that the tobacco farmers are facing including delays in tax refunds,” said Kalichero.
On this note, the Councilor assured MRA that all the required documentation for tax refunds would be submitted to the Authority, if need be, and encouraged them to give MRA a chance.
TAMA Farmers Trust had organized a series of meetings across the country to share with tobacco farmers issues pertaining to the tobacco marketing season where MRA was given a platform to update farmers on tax refunds.
