The Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) and the World Customs Organisation (WCO) today, 26 January 2024, join the rest of the globe in commemorating the International Customs Day.
This year, the day is being celebrated under the theme: ‘Customs Engaging Traditional and New Partners with Purpose.’
According to WCO, the focus in 2024 is for Customs Administrations to take action beyond traditional scopes and embrace new possibilities that will ensure sustainable facilitation of legitimate global trade and security in these rapidly changing times.
In line with the theme, MRA has been enhancing the engagement with traditional partners through outreach activities such as consultations, training and awareness of Customs processes and procedures with various players in the business sector. These include importers, exporters, clearing agents, warehouse operators and transporters, among others. Over time, engagement with these has proven to be very productive and we are committed to grow the existing relationships further.
With various regional and global markets emerging, the Authority is also establishing new connections with non-traditional stakeholders such as interest groups of commodities exporters and players in the local mining industry. MRA trusts that these new engagements will bring fresh perspectives and innovative solutions.
The Authority is also collaborating with other arms of the Government on matters of Customs administrations. These include the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Civil Aviation Authority and security agencies in order to enhance revenue collection, facilitate legitimate trade and protect the society.
We are also championing cultural transformation within the organisation with a view to achieve performance excellence and service excellence. Under the banner, MRA4Change, MRA is engaging staff and other stakeholders in the development of policy, processes and procedures for operational excellence.
Overall, members of the general public are assured of swift engagement by utilising information available on the MRA website; www.mra.mw including social media pages like Facebook and X to access up-to-date Customs and tax information. Taxpayers can also obtain guidance regarding exportation and importation of goods by directly calling the MRA Call Centre using Toll-Free Line 672.
